Sindh Holds Workshop to Discuss 500 MW Floating Solar Power Project at Keenjhar Lake

KARACHI: The Sindh Energy Department, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Department of Economic & Social Affairs (UN DESA), hosted a stakeholder engagement workshop on Thursday to deliberate on the 500 MW Floating Solar Power Project at Keenjhar Lake in Thatta district.

Held at a hotel in Karachi, the workshop is part of broader efforts to attract private sector investments through feasibility studies, investor matchmaking, and presentations at the SDGs Investment Fair.

Key participants included representatives from various government departments such as energy, irrigation, investment, agriculture, and forests, as well as the public-private partnership unit. Mehboob Siyal, Additional Secretary of the Energy Department, emphasized the project’s significance in advancing Sindh’s renewable energy objectives.

UNDP’s Assistant Resident Representative, Ms. Ammara Durrani, and Glenn Hodes, SDG Finance Specialist at UN DESA, highlighted the role of innovative financing in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs). Presentations by the UNDP SDG Investment and Climate Finance Facility and Go Energy detailed the technical and financial aspects of the floating solar project.

The event concluded with an open discussion moderated by Hamid Rashid, Climate Finance Expert at UNDP Pakistan, and Mehfooz Qazi, Director of Alternative Energy, Sindh. Participants explored the project’s potential, challenges, and strategies to mobilize private sector investment.

Ms. Durrani reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to supporting Sindh’s energy initiatives, while Mr. Qazi thanked UNDP for backing the feasibility studies and pledged government support to the project sponsors, M/s Go Energy Pvt. Ltd.

The workshop marked a crucial step toward attracting foreign investment and developing high-impact, SDG-aligned projects in the region.
